A 5-year-old boy chocked to death in Marlborough while he was riding the school
bus on Wednesday afternoon.
Around 20 to 30 children were on the bus at the time when
the boy swallowed a foreign object that was not food and choked, according to
the officials.
The boy attended the Francis J. Kane Elementary School
which issued a statement saying: “A kindergarten student choked, and medical personnel
responded immediately. After transport to Marlborough Hospital
unfortunately they were not able to revive the child,” boston.com reports.
Around 3:30 p.m. the bus driver called 911 and afterwards
pulled over on Maple Street,
according to Karen Kisty, executive aide for Marlborough Mayor Nancy Stevens.
Before taking him to the hospital, paramedics tried to save
the boy on the bus. He was then taken to Marlborough Hospital,
where he was pronounced dead.
The boy’s name wasn’t released.
Stevens said that the students will have a normal school day
on Thursday and that counselors will be at hand for children and teachers as
well.
According to Kisty, the entire community came to offer help.
The school principal, an assistant superintendent and school nurse came and
took home the children that were on the bus.
She said: “The bus driver was shaken up and couldn’t
continue the route,” Boston Herald reports.
The bus was owned by First Student Inc., based in Cincinnati, which
transports around 4 million students each day.
Nicole Maddock, a First Student spokeswoman said: “The
driver followed all the correct procedures that he was trained to do. He pulled
over, he called for an ambulance service, and secured the bus for medical
personnel. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the student who
died.”
