According to a fire department spokesman, an infant of four
months old was thrown from the third-floor balcony of a burning building in Wheaton Wednesday night.
The mother of the infant tossed him in the arms of a neighbor
that was on the ground, according to Pete Piringer, spokesman of the Montgomery County fire department.
One neighbor put a ladder from a work truck and propped it
against the third-floor balcony in order for the mother and two other adults to
come down.
Piringer said that the six apartments from the garden-style building
were affected by the fire, smoke or even water, Washington Post reports.
Sixteen people were displaced due to the fire and six
people, including the infant were hospitalized. They were treated of bruises,
smoke inhalation, and lacerations.
The fire started around 11:45 p.m. in an apartment at the
second floor of the building in the 12100 block of Georgia Avenue, at the Oakfield
Apartments, which were known as Georgian Woods Apartments.
One person called 911 and said that residents from the third
floor are trapped inside. Until firefighters arrived there, those people managed
to escape with the help of the neighbors.
One neighbor helped another one to come down the ladder and Monerville
Jones was there to help.
He said: "I helped him get that gentleman off the
window ledge and ran around back to the ledge to get everybody else off," wjla.com
informs.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
According to Piringer, the damage is estimated at $450,000.
