AT&T, U.S.’ largest mobile network operator, plans to
launch a live mobile phone TV service in May from MediaFlo USA, a unit of
Qualcomm Inc.
The move represents another feature beyond voice calls and
text messages that carriers are pushing in the hopes of augmenting their
revenues streams.
The service comes more than a year after AT&T initially hooked
up with Qualcomm and it follows Verizon Wireless, which brought out the service
a year ago.
AT&T said it would offer MediaFlo to users of the Vu
phone from LG electronics Inc and the Access from Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.
It also plans two exclusive channels it did not name, according to Reuters.
AT&T service will include the same eight-channel lineup –
CBS Mobile, Comedy Central, ESPN Mobile TV, Fox Mobile, MTV, NBC News 2Go, NBC 2Go
and Nickelodeon - the same channels offered by MediaFlo to Verizon Wireless a
year ago.
The price of the service was not revealed, remaining secret
until the service’s launch. Why waiting until May? Well, Representative Mark
Siegel said AT&T waited until May to offer the service as it was “a brand
new service on a brand new network, and two brand new devices.”
Signing this deal, Qualcomm hopes the service will expand in
the coming years as more and more consumers watch TV on their handsets. Moreover,
to improve its ability to broadcast the video signals, Qualcomm bought additional
wireless licenses in the just concluded federal Communications Commission
spectrum auction.
