AT&T is getting more musical as the days pass: after the famous partnership with Apple to bring out the iPhone, and after the recent music-on-demand service announced on July 31, the company has teamed up with LG to market a new mobile phone device that emphasizes music services.
The device is called LG CU575 "Trax" and it is a quad-band, UMTS-capable phone, with GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA connectivity. It has a rather disappointing 1.3 Mpx camera, but also sports a MP3/WMA/AAC/eAAC+/AAC+ music player with external touch pad, speakerphone and up to 20 Bluetooth pairings.
The handheld also compensates with a 65k color TFT, 176x220 resolution main display, and with a 65k color TFT, 128x160 resolution sub-display.
The phone will be compatible with AT&T's recently unveiled Mobile Music service, with MobiTV and XM Radio Mobile, and even includes the Music ID application that can be used to identify songs heard over the radio.
The 3G capabilities are impressive, allowing for easy access to services ranging from AT&T’s CV video to mobile content from CNN, iFilm or Comedy Central. Video Share one-way video calling is also among the supported features.
"The trax by LG offers AT&T customers an extremely functional music phone with a cutting-edge design," says Ehtisham Rabbani, vice president of product strategy and marketing for LG Electronics. "Features such as CV and the ability to sync music from Napster, eMusic and Yahoo! Music make trax an excellent phone for the convergence of communication and entertainment."
"The trax by LG is more than a music phone," says Carlton Hill, vice president of product management for AT&T's wireless unit. "With top-notch video and data capabilities, in addition to a sleek design, this device will hit the right note with many of our customers."
The phone will be available starting August 14 for an estimated retail price of US$129.99 with a new 2 year contract, after a mail-in rebate.
