On Friday, AOL officials confirmed the company’s upcoming moves; as it turns out, important changes are about to be made. AOL will sell its online storage service XDrive and will close three other services: Bluestring, AOL Pictures and MyMobile.
The announcement came one day after TechCrunch published a memo Kevin Conroy, executive vice president of products and marketing, had sent AOL employees.
The purpose of the memo was to present the company’s plan to give up on the services that in time have proved to be less successful and direct all efforts towards those that are most financially effective and contribute to the economic health of the company.
According to Kevin Conroy, Bluestring, Xdrive and AOL Pictures haven’t managed to gain enough market traction or bring in sufficient revenues for covering the high costs involved in the development and maintenance operations. He went on to say that for boosting the XDrive project, the company would have to turn to subscription and advertising revenues; for the time being, such actions do not fit AOL’s plan.
XDrive, acquired back in 2005, is the service that provides storage for the company’s media sharing application Bluestring. AOL will try to sell the three services in an attempt to accommodate existing users; if it succeeds, they will simply be passed on to a new provider. However, if it fails to find companies willing to take them on, the services will be shut down.
The announcement is not a big shocker at all as this is not the first similar move done by AOL; last year alone, 50 underperforming products were dropped by the company.
