The historical Atlantic City Boardwalk suffered a bit of fire Sunday as the Casino Control Commission office lost six large windows and was filled with smoke.
The Commission office’s spokesperson, Daniel Heneghan, said six stories on the second floor of the structure were blown out and there was smoke throughout the building; the damage was nevertheless “actually minimal,” he added, “aside from the windows.”
“There was no charring of anything inside our building, but there is some debris around,” Heneghan said. There were no injuries.
He added casino operations would not be affected. Approximately half of the commission’s employees work out of the building while the rest are assigned to casinos throughout the city. None were in the building when the fire broke out.
Authorities reported that the fire was contained to a single building that housed several retail shops. At least five of the stores were destroyed. Authorities reportedly believe the fire started under the walk-up ramp near New York Avenue, where homeless people live in cardboard boxes.
The fire is considered accidental.
The commission’s offices will be closed Monday.
