ABC and NBC in Tug of War over Scrubs

The final season of medical comedy “Scrubs” lies on uncertainty: is it to air on ABC, NBC or find a home on DVD?

The Hollywood Reporter posted an article on its website Thursday reporting that ABC is in negotiations to pick up 18 episodes of the series from sister network ABC Studios, which has produced the comedy for NBC since 2001.

Twelve of the episodes had already been finalized before the Hollywood writers’ strike erupted in November. The remaining six episodes have not received approval to be completed.

Creator Bill Lawrence has previously said he would complete his series on DVD if he had to.

Responding to Thursday’s reports that “Scrubs” could make a shift from NBC to ABC, NBC co-chairman Marc Graboff said in a statement Friday that the network still has “exclusive” rights to keep the show and that the alleged negotiations between ABC Studios and ABC would be in breach of contract.

“NBC has a license agreement with ABC Studios, which includes an exclusive right of first negotiation and first refusal to extend the series term beyond this season,” Graboff said in a statement.

“We’re living under the terms of this license agreement and we expect ABC Studios to do the same.”

ABC Studios chose not to respond at the time.

Contracts for most cast members and writers have reportedly not been picked up beyond the current season and the show’s star, Zach Braff, who also directed a portion of the episodes, has said he will not appear in the seventh and final season.

“Scrubs” has enjoyed critical appreciation but its modest ratings have been a continual nuisance.

NBC has five original episodes left of “Scrubs,” which the network plans to air starting April 10, the Hollywood Reporter informs.
