A drummer for the Swedish pop band ABBA has been found dead
after suffering an accident at his home in Spain.
Ola Brunkert, 62, had retired from the music industry and
lived alone at his home on the Mediterranean island of Majorca. A neighbor
found him lying in his garden, with a bleeding wound to the neck.
A police spokesman said the post-mortem analysis revealed
the death was accidental. Brunkert had apparently hit his head against the
glass door of a room in his house, breaking the glass and cutting himself in
the neck. He tried to stop the bleeding by tying a towel around his neck and
went outside to seek help, when he collapsed in the garden.
Ola Brunkert was born in Sweden in 1946 and apparently was
the only instrumental musician to appear on all the albums released by the
famous Swedish band ABBA. He played with the band since their first single,
“People Need Love.” He also toured with the group in 1977, 1979 and 1980.
He has also been a jazz drummer and a member of the blues
band Slim’s Blues Band. He retired to Majorca 20 years ago, but continued to
play with his jazz band.
The four ABBA members said in the Swedish daily newspaper
“Expressen” that they were deeply saddened to find out about the death of
Brunkert, whom they appreciated both as a musician and as a person.
"I remember him as a good friend when we worked
together in the mid-1970s. He was a very creative musician who contributed a
lot when we toured together and worked in the studio," Bjorn Ulvaeus, former
member of ABBA, told Expressen.
ABBA became internationally famous with hits such as
“Dancing Queen,” “Money, Money, Money,” “Take a Chance on Me” or “Waterloo.”
Even though the group broke up almost 25 years ago, it still sells two or three
million albums a year.
