Pilots of an American Airlines flight decided to carry out an emergency landing at the Los Angeles airport after smoke was detected in the cabin. The incident occurred on Tuesday and the aircraft was evacuated shortly after the landing.
There were 188 passengers and six crew members aboard the Boeing 757. There were no injuries according to AMR Corp spokesman Tim Smith. AMR Corp is the parent company of American Airlines.
Flight 31 took off from LA at 8:48 a.m. PDT (11:48 a.m. EDT) and was bound for Honolulu. After smoke broke out in the cabin, the pilots returned on LAX (the departure airport). There was no sign of fire, Smith said.
The four slides packed into the plane’s doors were used to quickly evacuate the passengers. Smith labeled the evacuation as „fairly uncommon" adding that he had no information on why this procedure was used. After being evacuated from the aircraft, the passengers were bussed to the terminal.
"We’re not sure why the slides were deployed for this emergency evacuation. That is very uncommon. We haven’t had a chance to talk to the crew to determine why they did that," American spokesman Tim Wagner said. He added that there was no indication of a fire, a fact that was later confirmed by Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey, CNN reported.
It is still unknown what had caused the smoke in the cabin. The Boeing Co-manufactured plane will be taken out of service for an investigation.
