Her role as Doralee Rhodes in the smash 1980 movie “9 to 5”
confirmed Dolly Parton as a bona fide actress and now she revives those years,
having written 20 original songs for the musical adaptation that is scheduled
to open on Broadway in April 2009.
The musical adaptation of “9 to 5,” directed by Joe Mantello
and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, will begin previews at Broadway’s
Marquis Theatre on March 24, 2009, reports Broadway.com. Opening night has been
set for April 23.
The book is by screenwriter Patricia Resnick (who wrote the
original screenplay for “9 to 5”), while Dolly Parton created the music and
lyrics. Dolly Parton also starred in the 20th Century Fox motion picture which
was a huge success upon being released and even spawned a television series.
Dolly Parton will not reprise her role as Doralee Rhodes and
neither will Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. The three secretaries’ roles will be
played by Stephanie J. Block as Judy, Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Allison
Janney as Violet and Megan Hilty as Doralee.
Their despised, sexist, misogynist, deceitful boss Franklin
M. Hart Jr. will be played by Tony Award nominee Marc Kudisch.
Dolly Parton contributes over 20 new songs to the show,
among them the movie’s theme song, “9 to 5” which earned the country star an
Academy Award for Best Song and multiple other awards. It did go on to win two Grammy
awards in 1982, for Country Song of the Year and Female Country Vocal of the
Year.
“Backwoods Barbie,” a single off Parton’s new album of the
same name, is also part of the show’s score.
Dolly Parton told the New York Daily News that she initially
wasn’t sure whether she could write music and lyrics for a Broadway show, “because
I’d never done anything like that for Broadway or a musical of any kind.”
“Then when I got into it, it just seemed to fall real
natural and [the producers] were liking what I was doing so it must have been
meant to be.”
