Amazing as it seems, a 9-year-old boy from Hillsboro, Texas, who suffered an orthopedic decapitation in a car accident 3 months ago has almost fully recovered. Even if Jordan Taylor, the boy, only had a 1-2 percent chance of surviving this type of injury, he managed to stay alive. Basically, his skull separated from his neck, but, fortunately, his spinal cord remained intact.
Stacey Perez, Jordan's mom, was driving when a dump truck plowed into her car after running a stop sign. Although Jordan was buckled up in the back seat, the impact was too much. Dr. Richard Roberts, from Cook Childrens' Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas, the pediatric neurosurgeon that saved Jordan's life, explained that the energy made his head lift up off his neck and then move forward. All of the connective tissue that kept its head connected to his neck was destroyed.
In order to reattach Jordan's skull, doctors used a metal plate and titanium rods. His head was stabilized by a carbon fiber ring that is screwed to his skull and attached to a vest. Furthermore, Jordan amazed everyone when he started to talk and walk without professional help. The kid will return to school after the Christmas break, as Dr. Roberts says: “As far as I’m concerned, he has a full recovery – he is neurologically intact.”
One of Jordan's main advantages in this procedure was his age, as he has better tissue than someone who is 60 or 70. That's why he is active, and not weak. Jordan's mother suffered some significant injuries of her own, but she has also made a full recovery. In order to help Jordan recover well, several sports stars, including Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, visited him in the hospital.
Everyone wonders what Jordan's mother, Stacey, has been feeling throughout this whole process. It looks like she wasn't optimistic all the time, but she always hoped her boy would recover, even with the risk of Jordan being paralyzed or brain damaged. She just wanted him to live, and then the good news just kept coming, as Jordan started to talk and walk.
As for Jordan, he can't wait to see his friends back at school, and the school is also excited that he'll come back. This is another example of how hope and power can save someone from its worst fate. Of course, Jordan Taylor is now called a medical miracle, as little would think he would survive. His mother, Stacey Perez, told the media that she feels truly blessed. She did not think her boy will be back by Christmas and she didn't even think he would be back at all.
