Four people died in a plane crash not far from the Walker County Airport in Alabama. The plane crashed Sunday morning shortly after taking off from the airport.
Police identified the victims as Bobby Crump, a Jasper car dealer, his wife and son, and an Iowa woman, Walker County Sheriff John Mark Tirey said.
The names of the victims were released by police: Bobby Crump, Jan Crump, Matthew Crump (a University of Alabama student) and 19-year-old Lauren Brue of West Des Moines (also a University of Alabama student).
The four passengers were on their way to Gulf Shores on the Alabama coast, but unfortunately the plane went down at 7:55 a.m. in a wooded area not far from the airport.
Police officials said the plane was a four-seat, twin-engine Beechcraft BE-55, registered to Crump Nissan Inc. in Jasper. The information regarding the small plane was provided by the Federal Aviation Administration.
According to the FAA records, Bobby Crump was the pilot of the small plane. He had a license. The man owned an auto dealership but sold it several years ago.
Investigators from the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board were sent to the scene to find out what happened.
A similar accident occurred in New Mexico on Sunday. Five people died when the plane they were traveling in crashed shortly after taking off. The plane was a Cessna 206 which took off from the Route 66 Airport around 1 p.m. and crashed almost immediately.
