Eight more cases of people becoming infected with salmonella Schwarzengrund have been identified, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Since 2006, when the salmonella outbreak started, this is the very first time when dry dog food has been identified as a source of the infection in humans. No individual is known to have died due to the Salmonella enterica serotype Schwarzengrund, a fairy rare strain, and although the bacteria can cause serious infections in dogs and cats no pet has been reported sickened.
Overall, starting Oct. 31, 79 people have sickened due to the outbreak in 21 states, the Nov 7 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report reads. Most of the illnesses occurred in children 2 years old and younger, U.S. health officials said. The situation can worsen because even though the affected brands, made by Mars Petcare U.S., have been recalled, pet owners could still have the contaminated cat and dog kibble in their homes. Pedigree, Special Kitty and Member's Mark are included in the list of the affected brands.
“Consumers and health departments should be aware that all dry pet food, pet treats, and pet supplements might be contaminated with pathogens such as Salmonella, and consumers should use precautions with all brands of dry pet food, treats, and supplements,” the CDC said.
About two months ago, the dog food has been traced to a Mars Petcare U.S. plant in Everson, Pennsylvania. As a result, the company voluntarily recalled all products produced at the plant between Feb. 18 and July 29. Since the facility would be permanently closed, consumers should trust in the quality and safety of the pet products produced at Mars Petcare US’ other plants, the CDC says. A total of 23,109 tons of dry dog and cat food sold under 105 brand names has been recalled.
