The sci-fi movie “Transformers” about robotic beings that are either good or evil was the top objective for moviegoers this past week, raking in $67.6 million during the weekend.
“Transformers,” a DreamWorks-Paramount co-production, was released Monday across the USA, thus taking advantage of Wednesday’s Independence Day holiday in the States.
The Friday through Sunday period brought in $67.6 million in ticket sales, adding nicely to an estimated gross of $152.6 million for its first week in cinemas.
“Transformers” stars Shia LaBeouf as the great-great-grandson of Captain Archibald Witwicky, an explorer who discovers the first transformer robot. Shia’s character, Sam, finds himself in the center of a battle between the good and the bad of robotic aliens, and the Earth’s possible savior.
Other members of the cast are Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson and Jon Voight. Peter Cullen and Hugo Weaving lend their voices to the main robotic characters. “transformers” is directed by Michael Bay and executive produced by Steven Spielberg.
Second place in this weekend’s box office performance goes to “Ratatouille,” with $29 million, while “Live Free” raked in $17.4 million.
