According to police, seven people were killed and at least
four others were injured by a car which ran into a crowd on Saturday on a
suburban road.
Apparently the people were gathered to watch a drag race on
Route 210 when one of the cars lost control and about 3:40 a.m. it ran into the people who were standing on the
side of the road, according to Prince George's
County Police Cpl. Clinton Copeland.
He said that a tractor which was behind the car may have hit
someone on the road who was trying to avoid the crash.
Copeland said: "It's probably one of the worst scenes
I've seen. This is a situation that could have been avoided, and it's a very
tragic situation," the Associated Press reports.
He added that four people were rushed to the hospitals and
that they didn’t know anything about their conditions.
It is known that Route 210 has two lanes in both ways and
that traffic lights are present from 150 to 200 yards in Accokeek.
Accokeek is about 20 miles from Washington
and 55 miles from Baltimore.
According to Copeland, the investigators were still trying
to figure out the succession of events and had "more questions than
answers."
