Seven small bombs exploded in Ahmedabad, India on Saturday killing at least two people and injuring 55 other. The explosions occurred just a day after another series of blasts in India’s southern IT hub Bangalore, local authorities said.
Eight bombs were detonated in Bangalore on Friday leading to the death of at least one person and the wounding of six others.
The seven bombs had been placed in various places in Ahmedabad's crowded old city dominated by its Muslim community. For example, one of the bombs had been planted in a metal tiffin box, used to carry food, while another one was left on a bicycle. The official reports confirmed that there were seven explosions, central government's junior home minister Shriprakash Jaiswal said in an interview with the Sahara news channel.
"These were low-intensity bombs. This has been done by some terrorist group which wants to destabilize the country," he said.
The 55 people who were wounded in the blasts were immediately taken to the nearest hospitals, junior home minister Shakeel Ahmad said. According to another news channel, the number of wounded was 40.
The police report said that the first bomb went off at about 6:30 p.m. and the other six followed in close succession over 15 to 20 minutes. The first explosion occurred in Maninagar, a suburb of Ahmedabad the financial and industrial capital of the prosperous Gujarat state.
The attack, as well as the one in Bangalore, wasn’t claimed by any group, but Indian intelligence suspect Islamic militants.
