A fire exchange occurred in Istanbul near the United States Consulate on Wednesday leading to the killing of six people, including three police officers, CNN reported.
Two other police officers were wounded in the shootout. According to the police report, several gunmen pulled up in a white car during the morning and opened fire at the police security checkpoint outside the consulate.
Three assailants were also killed when police officers fired back. However, the identity of the gunmen is still unclear or it just wasn’t released.
The shooting began at about 11 a.m. local time at the building’s main entrance. Fortunately, nobody working at the consulate itself was injured in the shootout. There are American employees working at the consulate and, at the time of the shootout, there were several people waiting to obtain visas inside the heavily fortified building.
After the shootout, three bodies were lying down in front of the consulate’s main gate. Police and several ambulances arrived at the scene straight away and cordoned off the area.
The last similar incident occurred in Turkey in November 2003 when several bomb attacks were carried out in Istanbul. Then, the targets were the British consulate, two synagogues and a British-owned bank. More than 70 people, including the British consul general, died in the blasts.
