On Thursday, the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Oxon Hill was the scene of a health related incident, a norovirus infection sickening 65 people.
The affliction was first detected when the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority received calls for a dozen sick people at Reagan National Airport Thursday evening. All involved had similar symptoms, which included nausea, and had their flights canceled for further investigations.
Given the fact that the convention had approximately 350 guests, it is safe to say that the outcome of the whole event could have been, by far, much worse. Still, officials reached most of them in order to have a confirmation on their present heath.
A spokesperson for Gaylord said the health officials reached the conclusion that the sickness was the result of a virus and was in no way connected to a food poisoning or an environmental issue.
Noroviruses cause the stomach flu, also known as gastroenteritis. People risk getting it through contact with infected people, ingesting contaminated food or drink, or by touching contaminated items and then their mouths, the health department said according to the Associated Press.
At this point, health officials stated that 64 of the people involved in the incident have already been sent home and that the situation has been successfully handled.
In order to prevent future aggravations, measures were immediately taken so that all hard surfaces, rooms, linens and carpets at the hotel will get a full decontamination cleaning session.
