The north-east region of Nevada State was rocked by a powerful earthquake.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the tremor had a magnitude of 6 on the Richter scale. The quake struck at about 10 miles (15 Kilometers) at 0616 (1416 GMT) south-east of Wells, a town of about 1,300 people, 382 miles north of the gambling center of Las Vegas and 180 miles (290 km) west of Salt Lake City.
The Geological Survey initially said the tremor had a magnitude of 6.3, but then revised the figure.
The quake was centered a low populated are near the state’s border with Utah and was felt as far away as southern California.
The media reports also show the tremor damaged some building in the area. The quake was labeled as "pretty bad” by a local hotel employee who spoke to the Associated Press.
"Everything in our whole building shook, we have cracks in our walls," Jane Kelso said.
Elko County Undersheriff Rocky Gonzalez said the reports of some quake-damaged buildings weren’t confirmed yet.
The tremor was felt all the way to Boise, Idaho, and as far east as Salt Lake City, said John Bellini, a geophysicist with the survey's National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colorado.
Due to the fact that the earthquake occurred in rural Nevada, it is hard to estimate whether there were any injuries/damages or not, said Chuck Allen, a spokesman for the Nevada Department of Public Safety. The Department has already sent troopers in the region to help local law enforcement.
