A drive-by attack at a crowded high school basketball game in Chicago ended with five people shot. The incident, which police said it was gang-related, took place in the Windy City’s South Side and sent the students who were spectators at the basketball game fleeing in panic.
The five victims, all males, are currently at the hospital receiving treatment. Three of them were listed in serious condition, while the other two in critical condition. Now, two of them are in serious condition, one in critical condition and two in stable condition. At least three of them will be released soon, hospital officials said.
The drive-by shooting happened at the Paul Laurence Dunbar Vocational Career Academy at about 8 p.m. The shooting occurred outside the high school.
"It appears to be gang-related," Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis said. The investigation into this case has started and more than 200 police officers are taking part, Weis added. Security cameras are currently being examined. No arrests have been made yet.
"We anticipate solving this thing in the not too distant future."
A female victim was injured when she fell and was listed in good condition at a nearby hospital. All the victims are young, said Chicago Fire Department spokeswoman Eve Rodriguez. It is unknown yet if all are students.
While the shooting was taking place outside the high school building, the basketball game was in double overtime.
According to eyewitnesses, a silver truck pulled up to a nearby bus stop. Those inside the vehicle pretended to shoot and then they really started shooting.
“It was crazy,” Joshua Glaze, 15 and a freshman at the school, told The Associated Press. “It was like killers on the loose.”
After the police arrived at the scene, the streets around the school were blocked off, and the school and gymnasium were emptied.
