A mother and four children are dead, while the father of the children remains in surgery after firefighters responded to a fire and found stabbing victims at a home in Mason, Friday night. Mason is about 20 miles northeast of Cincinnati.

Ohio police said a woman with clear signs of stab wounds and her young child were found dead inside a burning house Friday night. Three of her other children saved from the fire and transported to local area hospital were declared dead later while in hospital care.

Her husband, who had also been stabbed, was transported to the University Hospital in Cincinnati where he remained for undergoing surgery early Saturday, Officer Troy Nelson said according to the Associated Press. The man succeeded to jump out of the second-story window and was found lying on the ground.

The police who are currently investigating the case have not revealed the names of the victims. However, they said the children had ages between 3 and 8 and two of them were twins. The police are also investigating the cause of death. They had waited for the firefighters to come and declare the house safe before they could enter and investigate the place of the incident, Nelson said. No one knows how the wife and husband were stabbed and by whom, but the house is being treated as a crime scene.

Authorities said they received a call reporting the fire just before 10 p.m.
