A driver trying to elude Seminole County deputies crashed into a train at more than 50 miles per hour. The powerful impact killed five people inside the truck on 18th Street in Sanford.
Deputies tried to pull over the reckless driver on two occasions in just 24 hours, both times for a traffic violation. The whole thing began around 4:30 Tuesday morning when police tried to pull over the wild driver for the first time. He didn’t stop and deputies did not chase him because the violation wasn’t serious enough.
The deputies saw the vehicle again in the evening at US 17/92 and 25th Street in Sanford. When they saw him around 11:00pm Tuesday, the deputies did not start a high speed chase, but tried to block the truck.
They chased him through the neighborhood and put out stop sticks to try and burst the truck’s tires and end the pursuit. The chase ended as the truck driver neared the area where the train was parked. The truck crashed into the train cars.
The horrific impact killed five passengers inside. Four were declared dead at the scene and a fifth passenger was taken to Orlando Regional Medial Center and later died from injuries.
The deputies firmly said they weren’t chasing the truck. However, people who witnessed the scene said the deputies were going well over 50 miles an hour as well when the crash occurred.
The sheriff's helicopter was also on the tracks of the truck. The supposed recording of the crash from the helicopter hasn’t been confirmed yet. There are still many unanswered questions about the crash. One of the most important is why the truck became such a target for deputies.
"Under these circumstances, this was a voluntary act. A lot of times you'll hear how a pursuit pushed people to continue faster or further. This was a voluntary act," Seminole County sheriff's Lt. Don Rufo said according to local6.com.
Police didn’t release the names of the five killed.
