Things aren’t looking so good for Shelley Malil, the actor
best known for his role in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” who was arrested Monday
for attacking his girlfriend Kendra Beebe with a knife, causing great bodily
injury. According to The Associated Press, Wednesday, the actor pleaded not
guilty to attempted murder, but, if convicted, he could get a maximum sentence
of life in prison.
Shelley Malil, 43, is held on $10 million bond as Superior
Court Judge Marshall Hockett deemed him a flight risk. The charge against him
carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. For now he is held at San Diego County Detention
Center. His girlfriend
Kendra Beebe, 35, the mother of two, was taken to a hospital as she was in
critical condition Sunday. She is expected to survive.
According to prosecutor Steven Carver, Shelley Malil went to
Kendra Beebe’s house on Sunday, located in suburb of San Marcos, and attacked her with a knife.
Malil came up to the woman and started stabbing her without a previous
discussion or fight. Fortunately Shelley Malil was stopped by a man who came to
visit Kendra Beeebe but the actor found another knife inside the house and
continued the attack. Hearing all that noise, a neighbor came and took the
second knife from Malil, stopping him for good.
“There was a prolonged attack. He did not stop his murderous
acts voluntarily but because of the heroic acts of the neighbor,” said Steven
Carver.
Kendra Beebe was stabbed 20 times and 3 stabs punctured her
lungs and throat. She is still hospitalized and her condition is stable.
Shelley Malil was arrested on Monday, as his lawyer Sean
Leslie told him to take the train from Los Angeles
to Oceanside
and surrender. Steven Carver said that the actor was convicted in 2005 of a
misdemeanor hit-and-run while he was driving under the influence of alcohol.
Shelley Malil became known with a Budweiser commercial and
he appeared in many TV shows, including “NYPD Blue” and “Scrubs.”
