Shelley Malil, the Indian comedic actor who played a supportive role in the comedy “The 40 Year Old Virgin,” was arrested after he allegedly got involved in an attack which ended with his ex-girlfriend, Kendra Beebe, being stabbed 20 times.

The actor, a 43-year-old Sherman Oaks resident, was taken in police custody around 6 p.m. Monday and is now being held at the Vista Detention Center. Police officers seized him when he got off an Amtrak train in Oceanside. Malil was returning from a trip to Los Angeles to talk to his lawyer in anticipation of turning in to police, Lt. Phil Brust of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department stated.

Malil was arrested under charges of attempted murder, mayhem and burglary. The actor is being detained in lieu of $2-million bail. Authorities scheduled his arraignment for 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Police investigators did not mention the reasons that caused the aggressive attack. The only detail they provided was that Malil and Beebe had been involved in a dating relationship which had recently ended.

The two had been boyfriend/girlfriend until Sunday morning. The last time they were seen together, the couple was packing up the car with Beebe's two kids for a beach trip, a neighbor told TMZ.com.

The attack occurred just before 9 p.m. Sunday at the victim's home in San Marcos.

Another neighbor told TMZ.com that Malil attacked 35-year-old Beebe with a knife in front of the two kids, but also spotted another man in the backyard who tried to stop the scuffle. The man fled the scene and came back later to speak to police.

According to another account, the two children - aged 2 and 4 - were sleeping inside the house when the attack occurred.

Neighbor Charleton Lee, who gave details about the attack, wrapped Beebe in a blanket in an attempt to stop the bleeding before medical personnel arrived at the scene. The woman is now at Palomar Hospital and her state is critical with cuts to her face, but she is expected to survive.

"Her chin was almost entirely cut off," the neighbor told KNSD.

Malil played the secondary role of Haziz, one of the 40-year-old virgin’s electronics store colleague. He also played roles in several TV shows such as "NYPD Blue" and "Scrubs."
