$400 Million For “The Dark Knight”: Another Record Smashed

“The Dark Knight” is proving to be an unstoppable force at the box office and a milestone like reaching $400 million appears to be no serious obstacle for this phenomenon. The film managed to break the previous 43-day record by reaching the impressive sum in a mere 2 weeks and a half.

Warner Bros.’ “The Dark Knight” previously amassed a whopping $300 million in just 10 days, surpassing the spectacular 16-day period it took 2006’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” to total that much.

“The Dark Knight,” directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger as Batman and his insane nemesis the Joker, respectively, has now reached new heights: hitting $400 million in 18 days.

By comparison, it took “Shrek 2” 43 days to reach that total in 2004.

Now proudly bearing the title of eighth all-time box office hits, “The Dark Knight” is mere million away from ascending on this particular chart, with 2002’s “Spider-Man” less than $4 million upwards, at $403.7 million.

First on that all-exclusive chart is 1997’s “Titanic,” with its stellar $601 million. Warner Bros. distribution president Dan Fellman previously predicted “The Dark Knight” would cross the $400 million touchstone in 18 days, a forecast which has come true, after which it would be “uncharted waters.”

The film topped the North American box office chart while simultaneously becoming No. 1 in the UK and Ireland, earning nearly $97.8 million since its July 25 release, reports the BBC.

The comic-book adaptation, which follows 2006’s “Batman Begins,” has become the top-grossing in its genre, rewriting box office history. It will also forever be associated with the tragic demise of star Heath Ledger, as well as with notoriety from Christian Bale’s arrest in late July and Morgan Freeman’s car accident in early August.
