After hitting the headlines with her “Saturday Night Live”
Impersonation of Gov. Sarah Palin, Tina Fey is ready to boost ratings for her
own show as well.
The comedienne managed to draw millions of viewers by faking
the already famous Alaskan accent and wearing pink or red suits, in her
successful attempt to make the most out of her sketch roles, which eventually
brought John McCain’s running mate in flesh on the popular show.
A couple of weeks ago, Sarah Palin herself tasted the
bittersweet “Saturday Night Live” acts and feigned indignation when she asked
Lorne Michaels, the executive producer of the NBC show, what happened to the
“30 Rock” skit that she had supposedly written.
“Honestly,” Mr. Michaels explained, “not enough people know
that show.”
Well, things are about to change, as all of the eyes that have
been focusing on Tina Fey lately will presumably turn to her comedy series,
which is scheduled to return on Thursday for its third season.
In spite of the fact that “30 Rock” has won critical
acclaim, as well as multiple Emmy awards, the show failed to lure a wide and
loyal audience and this is reflected in the average ratings the program
produced and written by Tina Fey (who also stars as Liz Lemon) registered
throughout it’s first couple of seasons.
Alongside Tina Fey, however, the show will surely enter the
spotlight. Some may say it resembles excessively the oldie-but-goldie “Mary
Tyler Moore Show,” but I think Tina Fey offers “30 Rock” an original touch as
well, especially because she’s playing next to an enjoyable Alec Baldwin.
The comedienne fills the shoes of Liz Lemon, the head writer
of a comedy show, “TGS with Tracy Jordan,” whose cast and producers make a
quite unusual, but funny team.
Tracy Morgan impersonates the unmanageable star of the
fictional show, while Alec Baldwin is Jack Donaghy, a polished, yet meticulous
network executive with an affinity for visibly insincere compliments, usually aiming
at Liz Lemon.
During the first episodes of “30 Rock,” Alec Baldwin outperformed
his co-stars, as his character seemed the most interesting and appealing (how
can a person – even a fictional one – pass unnoticed if he’s dating Condoleezza
Rice). However, Tina Fey gained important ground and so did Jane Krakowski, who
plays Liz’s anxious, sex-passionate best friend.
The third season opens with a very entertaining episode, as
Liz, who is a single career woman, plans to adopt a baby. Thus, in an effort to
make an impact on the adoption agency’s inspector (Megan Mullally), she puts on
a skirt that resembles a garden in spring and walks to work accompanied by a
song only Carrie Bradshaw would appreciate.
This season, “30 Rock” will host appearances by Oprah
Winfrey, Jennifer Aniston, as well as Steve Martin. Apart from the cast-related
surprises, the show’s tasteful and clever jokes, appear to be concentrating on
another Emmy, perhaps, and certainly more viewers.
