Two people were killed and three other were wounded in a South Los Angeles drive-by shooting, authorities confirmed on Monday.

The two people who died were in a car parked on 48th Street near Wall Street. The gunman opened fire from a green Dodge Caravan after he pulled off alongside them. The drive-by shooting happened at about 10:50 p.m. Sunday, said Officer Kate Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The woman was shot directly in the head and died at the scene of the crime, while the man, although he was also shot in the head, didn’t die at the spot but was pronounced dead later at the hospital.

The Los Angeles police hasn’t released the names of the people killed, but said they were Latinos. The man was approximately 20 years old, while the woman was 21, said Ed Winter, assistant chief of the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

After shooting at the vehicle, the gunman turned the gun on three women who were sitting on a nearby porch. Investigators believe he opened fire on the three women because he didn’t want to let any witnesses, said Officer Ana Aguirre, an LAPD spokeswoman.

The three women suffered injuries to the legs, but are now in a stable condition at a nearby hospital. The three were African American.

"They were caught in the line of fire," Lopez said.

The cause of the drive-by gangster style shooting is still unknown. Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to call detectives at (323) 846-5363.
