According to a military spokesman, twenty eight Tamil Tiger
rebels and eleven soldiers were killed on Wednesday in separate incidents in
the north of Sri Lanka.
The fights, which occurred in the northwestern district of
Mannar, northern district of Vavuniya and northern Jaffna peninsula, are the latest clashes of
what is seem to be a renewed civil war.
Four of the eleven soldiers were killed by a pressure mine
in Sinnasettikulam, Vavuniya 250 kilometers north of the capital. The accident
occurred when the tractor they were traveling with hit the mine. Two soldiers
were injured in the accident, DPA reports.
In another clash with the rebels in Nagarkovil, 380 kilometers
north of the capital, other four soldiers were killed along with seven rebels.
According to the military spokesman, three soldiers were
killed when a key road in Chinnacippikulam, Vavuniya, 240 kilometers north of
the capital, was attacked by rebels.
Eleven rebels were killed in two separate incidents in
Mullikulam, 270 kilometers north of the capital. Other ten rebels died in
different incidents in the north of the island.
The Tamil Tiger rebels want to form an independent state in
the north and east of Sri
Lanka.
Sri Lanka
government vowed that it will throw out the rebels from Mannar, after having
evicted them from vast jungle areas that they had in control in the east,
earlier this year.
Over 5,000 people died since 2006, when the fighting began
between the rebels and the military, and almost 70,000 since 1982, when the war
broke out.
According to military analysts, it’s hard to predict which
side will win, and there are fears that the war could continue for many years
ahead, Reuters reports.
