Algeria
is confronted with its second suicide bombing in less than 48 hours. The
casualties of the latest attack rise to 28, according to AFP sources, and
another 60 were wounded in the blast.
The attack took place in the northeastern part of the
country, 70 kilometers (45 miles) from Algiers,
in the port town of Dellys.
According to medical sources, the majority of the dead were part of the naval
coastguard, but also civilians were hurt.
The suicide terrorist hijacked a van that usually delivered
supplies to barracks after having kidnapped the driver and smashed through the
back entrance. It entered 20 meters the base and then exploded.
Unfortunately, authorities reported that the death toll is
constantly rising. The blast was so strong that managed to turn flat a large
part of the prefabricated buildings around.
Islamist militants are thought to be behind the condemnable
attack, according to governmental sources. France,
Spain and the European Union
condemned the Saturday attack, one of the deadliest that shattered Algeria since
April.
“The EU Presidency condemns in the strongest terms the
terrorist attack that occurred today in Algeria causing numerous deaths and
injuries,” as it was released in a statement.
The suicide bombing on Thursday appeared to be an
assassination attempt on President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, killing 22 people and
injuring 100 more. The blast focused a large group of people waiting for the
arrival of the President in the city of Batna,
located 430 kilometers south of Algiers.
Though no group claimed to be responsible for either attack,
Al-Qaeda is suspected to be behind them, judging from the self-styled offshoot.
