At least 25 people were killed and 151 were injured in a
triple car bombing attack in Amara, a Shiite city, on Wednesday.
According to Lieutenant Ali Kadhim Hassan from Amara police,
the three bombs were detonated minutes away from each other. The first bomb
exploded at 10:30 a.m. (0730 GMT), AFP reports.
Police said that the people who set the bombs in the parking
garage waited for the first two to go off and after the people gathered they
detonated the third, United Press International informs.
Apparently most of the victims come from the third blast.
The general director of Amara health department, Zamil
Shia'a al-Oreibi, said that among the 151 wounded there were also 10 children.
One bomb attack was confirmed by British military spokesman
Major Mike Shearer, who said that the bomb went off in a market.
Relatives of the victims rushed to hospitals in Amara to
find their loved ones.
Police announced that a 24 hour curfew is imposed in the
city as to search all the cars and especially the ones that enter the city, said
a resident, whose brother was injured in the attack.
Province Maysan’ s security was handed over by the British
forces to local forces in April, but ever since then Amara, the capital of the
province, suffered from the Shiite fighting that leaded to confrontation
between militias and police.
A British parliamentary committee said that Britain didn’t succeed in bringing peace in
southern Iraq.
The House of Commons defense committee said: “The initial
goal of UK forces in
southeastern Iraq
was to establish the security necessary for the development of representative
political institutions and for economic reconstruction. Although progress has
been made, this goal remains unfulfilled.”
