Hollywood actor Kiefer Sutherland was sentenced to 48 days behind bars in connection with his September DUI arrest, the second one in three years. In addition to his jail sentence, the actor was also put on five years probation and ordered to complete an 18-month alcohol program plus six months of weekly therapy sessions.
The 40-year-old Emmy winner, who pleaded no contest in October to driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit of 0.08, reported to Glendale City Jail to start doing his time, just hours after his conviction, E!Online reported.
Sutherland was granted the request to serve his time at the Glendale city jail and ordered to complete the sentence by March 30, Assistant City Attorney Dan Jeffries said.
"It's a safe and secure place, but it doesn't suffer from overcrowding," he said.
"There will be no early release and no good time work time. He will serve the entire sentence," city attorney spokesman Nick Velasquez was quoted by Los Angeles Times as saying. Velasquez added that Sutherland was given 30 days for the arrest in September while the remaining 18 days involve a probation violation from a previous DUI case.
Initially, the actor was supposed to check in on December 21, and start doing his time while "24" was on the winter break, but because of the writers strike, plans changed.
"Kiefer made the decision to surrender to custody i,mmediately," his attorney, Blair Berk, told The Associated Press.
Best known for playing US secret agent Jack Bauer on Fox' "24", Sutherland was already on probation for a 2004 drunken driving arrest when he was stopped by police shortly after midnight as he left a Hollywood industry party at the trendy Area nightclub on Sept. 25. Authorities said he failed a field sobriety test after being pulled over for making an illegal U-turn.
In 2004, he pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor DUI charge and was sentenced to five years probation, 50 hour of community service and ordered to attend an alcohol treatment program.
In a statement released following his most recent arrest, Sutherland apologized to his family, friends and co-workers for his behavior.
