This Friday we have a new movie to top the box office, a new premiere that promised to be a success and demonstrated that predictions were not wrong.
According to the estimations published by BoxOfficeMojo.com, “21” managed to earn on its opening day $8,550,000. The blackjack drama succeeded to dethrone the last week’s no. 1, “Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who!” that still remains a public-drawer two weeks after it was launched, grossing on Friday $5,250,000. Its total earnings rise to the remarkable amount of $105,099,000.
“21” depicts the story of young Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess), a shy, but brilliant M.I.T. student who finds the answers to his financial problems in the cards. Ben joins the group of the school's most gifted students, led by a math professor, Micky Rosa (Kevin Spacey). They are ready to gamble in Las Vegas every weekend armed with fake identities and the knowledge to turn the odds at blackjack in their favor.
By counting cards and employing an intricate system of signals, the team can beat the casinos big time, but soon Ben begins to push the limits.
On the third place, we find another premiere, MGM’s “Superhero Movie”, a parody largely based on “Spider Man”. Besides being ripped apart by critics, the movie did quite well, grossing $3,400,000 on its first day. “Tyler Perry’s Meet The Browns” kept its head up on its second week, earning $2,240,000 and placing on the fourth spot, raising its totals to $27,308,000.
“Drillbit Taylor,” starring freshly returned to the silver screen Owen Wilson is this Friday’s no. 6, totalizing $16,699,000. The adventures of the homeless-turned protector of three geeky teenagers having troubles with bullies at school premiered the last week.
Freshly launched “Stop-loss” focusing on the drama of an Iraq soldier that is faced with an order to return to the hellacious war is placed on no. 7, earning $1,675,000 on its first day. “10,000 B.C.”, “College Road Trip” and “Never Back Down” rounded Friday’s Top 10.
