According to the figures released by BoxOfficeMojo.com,
“Leatherheads” has failed to outsell last weekend number one, “21.”
Directed by George Clooney, who also plays the main role,
“Leatherheads” tries to mix in sports and comedy. Its action is set in the ‘20s
and Clooney plays the role of Dodge Connolly, a football hero who is ready to
do anything for his team.
The movie gained only $13,485,000 in ticket sales and failed
to meet the studios’ expectations of $16 million in the first three days.
“21”, the movie in which Kevin Spacey plays the role of
Micky Rosa, an MIT math professor who gathers a group of students teaching them
who to turn the odds at blackjack in their favor, remained on the first with
$15,100,000 in ticket sales. The total gross of the movie has reached $46,533,000.
“Nim’s Island,” the
fantastic comedy with Jody Foster and Abigail Breslin, has opened in the third
place with $13,300,000 and it was very close to knocking out “Leatherheads” from
its second place.
The animated movie, “Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!” is
still selling well, and it earned $9,100,000 bringing the total gross to $131,060,000.
The movie budget was $85 million and the popular animation maintains its
position as the 2008's top film.
“The Ruins,” the thriller based on the novel with the same
name, ranked fifth with $7,840,000.
“Superhero Movie,” a parody of Spiderman movies, which
opened last weekend, took up the sixth place this weekend, with $5,405,000.
“Meet The Browns”, the movie signed by Tyler Perry, which
depicts the story of Brenda (Angela Bassett), a single mom of a son and two
daughters, battling alone with financial difficulties, ranked seventh with
$3,510,000.
The other three movies that made it into Top 10 this weekend
are “Drillbit Taylor” ($3,495,000), “Shutter” ($2,875,000) and “10,000 BC”
($2,770,000)
