A charter bus with about 44 elementary school children aboard crashed on Interstate 59 on Friday. The children were on a field trip, but it all ended badly for them as 20 of them were rushed to nearby hospitals due to the injuries they suffered in the impact.

The bus driver passed out at the wheel. Amy King, the math teacher accompanying the children in the fieldtrip, noticed and grabbed the wheel to avoid a major crash because the bus would have careened into oncoming traffic.

The math teacher managed to keep the vehicle straight for a while but soon it veered off and flipped over the interstate, witnesses told The Birmingham News.

King and the sleepy driver were among the injured. None of the injuries are life-threatening.

This is the second major crash of the transportation company Adventure Bus Charter and Tours Inc. of Sumiton, Alabama, over the past month. The crash prompted federal regulators to consider carrying out a full compliance review of the company. The firm hasn’t had one since 1995.

The bus was taking the 44 elementary school children and two teachers of Bryan Elementary School in Jefferson County to Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga. The crash occurred at about 7:30 a.m. CDT on I-59 about 30 miles northeast of Birmingham, the highway patrol said.

"Three buses were traveling together. One bus left the road, hit a guard rail and overturned on the right shoulder," said state trooper spokesman David Richards for CNN.

The bus had to be lifted off a child according to Springville Fire Chief Richard Harvey. The investigation is still under way by Alabama State Troopers.
