The South Pacific musical production won seven prizes at the 62nd Annual Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Theatre, more commonly known as the Tony Awards. The ceremony was held at New York’s Radio City Music Hall and was hosted by Whoopi Goldberg.
On Sunday, South Pacific won the award for music revival, best director, four design awards including set, costumes, lighting and sound, while Paulo Szot was designated the best leading actor in a musical.
In the Heights, a show about Latino families living in uptown Manhattan, won best musical. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the 28-year-old who made his Broaday debut with this show, also picked up the awards for score, orchestrations and choreography for it.
“I used to dream about this moment, now I’m in it. Tell the conductor to hold the baton a minute,” rapped Miranda.
Tracy Letts’s Pulitzer Prize-winning August: Osage County was awarded the best play prize and also won the Toni Awards for scenic design, featured actress, actress and director.
“Writing is better than acting. You get to use your words, you don’t have to be there eight times a week and I can guarantee you that this moment beats the hell out of auditioning for JAG,” said Mr. Letts.
Gypsy - South Pacific's main rival – won three musical performance awards.
Patti LuPone received standing ovations when she was awarded the actress-musical prize for her performance as Rose, an indomitable stage mother.
"It's such a wonderful gift to be an actor who makes her living on the Broadway stage and then every 30 years or so picks up one of these," said LuPone.
Boyd Gaines, LuPone's co-star, won his fourth Tony award, this time for playing Herbie, Rose's gentlemanly suitor, while Laura Benanti won the featured actress award for impersonating the ugly-duckling daughter who blossoms into Gypsy Rose Lee.
