The cyclone that hit Pakistan’s southern Balochistan province has killed at least 225 persons, with hundreds of thousands losing their homes.
According to media reports Saturday, the heavy rainfall and the persistent floods have killed at least 225 people, making the military’s intervention necessary.
The bodies of 25 people were recovered in the Naal area of the Khuzdar district, raising the death toll to 225, Aaj news channel said. Some 100 are missing, causing officials to fear that more dead will be announced.
Pakistan’s military rescued over 10,000 victims of the cyclone by moving them to safer places.
“More than 800,000 people were affected and around 80,000 displaced by the cyclone Yemyin and subsequent heavy floods in the province,” military spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad told reporters in Rawalpindi.
He added that the extreme weather conditions prevented airborne relief efforts. Friday, thousands of people rioted, demanding food and other aid.
“A load of around 50,000 tons has been transported to the affected areas,”" Waheed said, adding that several helicopters and C-130 planes would continue their relief flights on Saturday.
