A tragedy has occurred in India as at least 144 people were killed and many more were injured in a stampede. The incident occurred at a Hindu temple in the state of Rajasthan (western India).
At least 25,000 worshipers gathered with the intention to reach the 15th century Chamunda Devi temple located on Jodhpur's hill-top Mehrangarh Fort. The tradition is part of a Hindu festival called Navaratri. It is the start of the nine-day festival and people were gathered to offer prayers.
It all went from bad to worst after some people lost their footing and triggered a chain reaction, said Rajasthan Home Secretary S.N. Thanvi according to AFP. According to other reports, the stampeded occurred after a wall along the narrow path leading up to the temple collapsed. The collapse killed seven pilgrims.
Local authorities confirmed that 144 people were killed in the stampede and 150 other were injured. The sight was as tragic as it gets as people were carrying injured or dead to police cars while other were making desperate attempts to resuscitate their unconscious relatives.
People lost their footing on a narrow path and, because the crowd was in a rush, the tragic incident occurred. It is not the first time such a thing happens in India. Last month, 145 worshipers were killed in a stampede outside a temple in Himachal Pradesh state. The stampede apparently occurred after rumors of an avalanche reached the pilgrims.
The main cause of these tragic stampedes is mainly the lack of crowd control. When and if it does exist, it’s rudimentary.
