Twelve people were injured after a Greyhound bus driver fell
asleep and his vehicle ran off the road and overturned Tuesday morning.
The crash occurred around 5:45 a.m. about 40 miles north of
Raleigh, as the bus was traveling toward its destination, Fayetteville. According
to the Associated Press, the bus reportedly ran into a ditch, rolled onto its
right side and slid about 100 feet.
Patrol spokesman Lt. Everett Clendenin said all the 29
passengers were taken to Mariah Parham Hospital in Henderson, where some of
them were treated for minor injuries. In the hospital’s auditorium, the passengers
waited for another bus.
The bus driver, Steven Leverne Holloman, 52, of
Fredericksburg, Va., was charged with careless and reckless driving.
"Mr. Holloman stated to troopers that he was very tired
and fell asleep at the wheel," Clendenin said.
As reckless driving is a serious moving traffic violation,
Holloman risks a period of up to 60 days in prison, or a fine, or both.
