A fire broke out Sunday at a commercial building in California injuring 12 members of the fire rescue crew, authorities said.
The blaze also led to a chemical spew as three storage tanks were ripped apart and 35 businesses were evacuated by authorities.
The firefighters suffered from mild-to-moderate respiratory irritation and chemical burns. They are in stable condition and they are expected to return to work this week according to Jeff Lutz of the Anaheim Fire Department, The Associated Press wrote on it Web site.
Authorities said there’s not sure when the blaze broke out, but it was reported at about 4 a.m. The fire broke out very close to the 4,000-gallon chemical storage tanks outside Alstyle Dyeing and Finishing.
Fortunately, the firefighters managed to contain and put out the fire in about two hours.
The two tank that burst open due to the blaze contained hydrogen peroxide and phosphoric acid. The two chemicals are not flammable, but added to the heat of the blaze, authorities said.
After the evacuation, specialized crews were sent in to clean up the spill.
Lutz told the Register firefighters would be "very cautious and safe" in their attempt to clean the chemical spill and "have the business back up and running as soon as possible."
Some issues are still under investigation. It is still unknown whether the firefighters were injured by the blaze or by exposure to the hydrogen peroxide. Another thing that remains to be solved is the cause of the fire.
