In just six months Blizzard’s widely-popular MMORPG, World
of Warcraft, has added another one million subscribers.
A plethora of new and returning WoW addicts have flooded Blizzard’s
game rooms during the holiday season
According to Blizzard’s definition a subscriber is anyone
who has paid a subscription fee, has an active prepaid card or used an internet
game room in the last 30 days. This figure doesn't include free promotional
subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid card.
Blizzard said that currently there are more than 2 million
subscribers in Europe, more than 2.5 million in North America, while in Asia it seems like the game has become something close to
a national sport with 5.5 million players.
"It's very gratifying to see gamers around the world
continuing to show such enthusiasm and support for World of Warcraft,"
said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We're
always pleased to welcome new players to the game, and we're looking forward to
sharing the next major content update with the entire community in the months
ahead."
World of Warcraft debuted in North America on November 23,
2004, and since then it has become the most popular MMORPG around the world,
practically dwarfing any competitor.
Blizzard is working on a new add-on, World of Warcraft:Wrath
of the Lich King, which is scheduled to be released later this year.
