The Oregon Department of Human Services said Thursday that Sprouters Northwest brand voluntarily recalled one of its products responsible for at least 13 salmonellosis cases. The latest outbreak of salmonella bacteria contamination from alfalfa sprouts sickened nine people in Washington and four in Oregon. Sprouters Northwest has taken responsibility for the consequences, and the ones who purchased the label, which is sold in a variety of package sizes or in mixed varieties, should discard or return to the store any such products. A 58 year-old Atlanta man was hospitalized for about a week after experiencing West Nile virus infection symptoms. Five cases of people infected by the potentially deadly virus have been diagnosed in Bridgeport, Greenwich, Sherman and two in Stamford.3,630 cases of people infected by the West Nile virus were reported last year, according to federal statistics. A total of 413 cases of West Nile virus have been reported in the state this year. Food and Drug Administration officials announced Friday that
they will begin posting a list of drugs that present the risk of giving strange
“adverse events." The list includes adverse events reported between Jan. 1
and March 31, 2008. FDA officials say it will be "weeks or months"
before more recent reports are made. The unveiled list has 20 drugs that are
currently under investigation.
Warnings have already been sent out by the FDA. Drugs such
as Insulin U-500 (Humulin R) or Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) Blockers are among

The rate of U.S. children getting their recommended
vaccinations against childhood diseases has remained high over the past years. The
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2007 National Immunization
Survey, which tracks vaccination rates for children between the ages of 19 and
35 months, found that 77.4 percent of children have been fully vaccinated with
all the recommended vaccines.
