It is sufficient to drop a single name in order to offer
some clues about a new movie premiere: Wachowski. And moviegoers will already
know that the production features overwhelming high-tech effects that would
take their breath away.
Andy and Larry Wachowski are masters of the green-screen
effects and from this point of view “Speed Racer,” which opens this week-end,
is a masterpiece in the domain. Based on the 1960s’ Japanese animation series
“Mach GoGoGo,” which were initially inspired by a comic book of the genre,
“Speed Racer” is an ineffable blend of elements of reality and of...

It is said that from hate to love there is only one step and
a new comedy premiering this week-end, “What Happens in Vegas,” is the exact
depiction of this saying.
As everyone might expect, the fact is applicable to a boy
hating a girl and vice-versa, hence we have Jack (Ashton Kutcher) and Joy

enough and wish it would stop. But it doesn’t, for 2 hours and 9 minutes.
The adaptation of the beloved Japanese cartoon of the 1960s,
“Speed Racer,” is barely similar to the old anime. It contains plenty of boring
car races and quite confusing flashbacks, while being as predictable as can be.
The actors...

David Mamet is a mature, complex director who sought himself
by embodying his different facets in films of various types. “Redbelt” looks
like a compendium of Mamet’s styles and perceptions, mingling a somehow linear
plotline with deep views on what the world nowadays means for a person with
deep unswerving values.
The plot has a martial arts background, without sketching
out a conventional fight film. Not contradicting the director’s creed that a
film has consistency when it emphasizes ideas and not characters, “Redbelt” is
not about Mike Terry (Chiwetel Ejiofor), but about...
