If you expected “90210” to bring a bunch of surprises, find
out it did. Although not a bunch and just a couple, the “Beverly Hills” spin off managed to surprise
its viewers, and not necessarily in a pleasant way.
On the one hand, the plot is so familiar, one would actually
take it for a “Beverly Hills”
episode if the faces weren’t new. Surprise! On the other hand, an up-to-date
posh soap about fabulously rich teenagers can’t possibly feature the same old means
of communication or transportation or whatever.
The hippest hairdos, the most stylish clothes, the very...

Although much likened to “The Sopranos” because of the
somewhat similar atmosphere and the plot that focuses on an outlaw family, the
new drama series “Sons Of Anarchy” certainly does not lack originality.
The new FX series involves plenty of brutality, immorality
and motorcycle gangs, but manages to seduce and surprise from the very first
episode.
It’s like the Sopranos lost their elegant suits, as well as
their sense of humor, got dressed in jeans and leather and jumped on
motorcycles, attempting to rule the Californian mountain town which is
ironically called Charming.

The most famous
voice in the U.S.A. died Monday. Don LaFontaine, the man who popularized
the catch phrase "In a world where...", passed away at Cedars-Sinai Medical
Center in Los Angeles from complications of a collapsed
lung, his agent Vanessa Gilbert said.
According to his website, LaFontaine started doing
voice-over work in the mid-1960s and went on to produce more than 5,000 movie
trailers and nearly 350,000 commercials.
Fellow voice-over artist Ashton Smith gave one of the best
descriptions of LaFontaine's talent: “When you die and go to heaven the voice
you hear...

With the Labor Day week-end marking the end of this year’s
summer movie season, the big-screen films that have hit the cinemas since May
are now counting their blessings. And their domestic earnings.
Ben Stiller’s “Tropic Thunder,” which stars Jack Black and
Robert Downey Jr. in an action comedy about a group of actors who set out to
make the biggest-budget war film and end up, after the director refuses to stop
shooting, in the jungles of Southeast Asia, was this week-end’s number 1. That
makes three week-ends in a row for the Hollywood
satire. Furthermore, it makes “Tropic...

Loading a production with characters, going back in time
whenever you get the occasion and changing settings as much as you can is not
the key to success. Somebody tell Guillermo Arriaga that he failed this time
with “The Burning Plain.”
Viewers don’t have time to get emotionally involved, because
trying to follow the movie’s idea requires too much concentration, leaving no
room for them to connect with the characters or their afflictions.
The plot moves too fast between New
Mexico and Oregon,
between past and present and the huge number of characters.
In a few words, two...
