The IG Nobel Prizes is a ceremony that parodies the real
Nobel Prizes and it is organized yearly by the scientific humor magazine
Annals of Improbable Research. The awards are given for real research which has
the characteristic of first making people smile and only afterwards making them
think. Awards have been won in the past for research concerning ideas like: ostriches
are sexually aroused by the presence of humans and black holes meet every
condition to actually be the location of Hell. Every year the event is hosted
with the help of real Nobel laureates at the beginning of...

MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging,
shortly Messenger, is a NASA probe that will soon do a flyby of Mercury and
take approximately 1,200 photographs of the planet’s territory. Mercury is the
closest planet to our sun and, after the rejection of Pluto as a planet, the
smallest planet in our solar system. The only other detailed photos of Mercury
were taken in 1974 and 1975 by NASA’s Mariner probe. The Mariner only managed
to chart 45% of the planet’s territory the rest remaining unknown. Messenger is
expected to pass 125 miles above Mercury and after that it...

NASA scientists are eager to hear what happens when they turn on a previously unused microphone from the Phoenix Lander on Mars. According to an announcement by mission leaders on Monday, the microphone will be activated within the next week or two. The microphone is itself part of a larger system called the Mars Descent Imager (MARDI), which was fixed to the underside of the Phoenix Lander, pointing downward; its intended role was to take shots of the Mars Lander’s descent as it touched down. However, the microphone has so far never been turned on, due to safety concerns. Back in 1999,...

Scientists at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, announced on Friday via live video-link, together with their North American and Asian colleagues that the massive computer grid, consisting of a total of 100,000 processors, and which is capable of processing the 15 petabytes of data outputted by the LHC each year, is online and ready for action. Early during the development of the Large Hadron Collider, which is the biggest project of its kind ever undertaken, scientists realized that the sheer amount of data generated by its particle analyzers would be far greater than...

We may not be aware of this, but the lack of control can
often fuel our incoherent perception of things, and make us perceive illusory aspects
around us, such as strange noises or images, as well as develop conspiracy
beliefs and superstitions. According to study appeared in the online journal
Science, and signed by Jennifer Whitson of the University of Texas, Austin, and
Adam Galinsky at the Northern University, Evanston, there is a direct
connection between the lack of control and the illusory pattern perception.
The mechanism at the base of people’s misperceptions resides
in the...
