The Universe is known to be the home of some incredible
energy-generating phenomena, capable of creating radiations that are billion of
times more energetic than the light visible to our eyes. In order to better
understand what exactly produces the energy and how this affects the
surrounding environment, NASA developed the Gamma-ray Large Are Telescope
(GLAST), an instrument capable of observing gamma rays in the Universe with
unprecedented sensitivity.
Since the new observatory began its mission on June 11,
2008, scientists have been working on calibrating its two instruments,...

Sea ice levels are approaching a new record this year, which
unfortunately is a negative one. The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) reported
that the levels have fallen bellow the 2005 minimum, approaching the 2007
record low. With just a few weeks left before the melt season is over, the
tendency remains crystal clear: the ice sea levels continue their negative
trend that best illustrates the past decade.
Sea ice covers 7 percent of world’s ocean water, or
approximately 25 million square kilometers (9,652,553 square miles) and mostly
concentrates in Earth’s polar regions....

Recent studies point out that Neanderthals might have had a
lot more going on than people think, as the careful observation of several
stone tools shows that the manufacturing process was as good as the one done by
the ancestors of modern humans, Homo sapiens.
The research, done by a team from the University of Exeter
in southwest England, is looking into the reasons that led to the extinction of
Neanderthals more than 28,000 years ago, after 10,000 years of sharing the same
space with modern humans.
"Our research disputes a major pillar holding up the
long-held...

NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and Hubble Space Telescope
gathered more clues on dark matter and its properties, as they captured a
powerful collision of galaxy clusters two years after the Bullet Cluster was
first revealed.
Just like the previous collision, the new cluster, known as
MACS J0025.4-1222, provides crucial evidence on the mechanisms behind the
Universe’s dark matter, highlighting the separation between dark and ordinary
matter.
In August 2006, NASA reported that they had finally found
evidence of the existence of dark matter, thanks to Chandra’s observations...

When it comes to quick and sometimes life-saving reactions,
nothing beats the flies, as shown in a recent study conducted by
biologists Gwyneth Card and Michael Dickinson from the California Institute of
Technology and published in the August 28 issue of Current Biology.
The two researchers focused on the escape behavior of
Drosophila, or the fruit fly. The experiments indicated that flies use visual
information to plan a jump away from the looming threat. It appears that the
flies begin to plan their escape 200 ms before takeoff, by making adjustments
to their body position in the...
