The Nobel Prize for chemistry is shared this year by three
US-based scientists, one of them Japanese and two American, each of whom had a
contributing part in the discovery and application of GFP – green fluorescent
protein – which may be used to better observe and study certain cells.
The protein found in certain jellyfish is bioluminescent, it
glows. But the main difference between GFP and others like luciferase, which is
found in Fireflies, is that unlike the latter, the GFP’s ability to glow is not
dependent on a specific chemical that gets used up in the process.
When a cell...

The Nobel Prize is a foundation that celebrates discoveries and excellence in a number of fields, such as Physics or Medicine. It draws its name from the famous Swedish chemist Alfred Bernhard Nobel. He was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in October 1933. Best known for his pioneer achievements in chemistry, he was also a skilled engineer, innovator and he owned Bosfors, an armament manufacturer. To show gratitude for his contribution, the chemical elite named the synthetic element nobelium after him. Alfred Nobel is most notorious for his invention of the dynamite. The irony of him instituting a...

Washington - Martin Chalfie, a professor of biological sciences at Columbia University in New York, and Roger Y Tsien, a professor of pharmacology at the University of California in San Diego, were among three scientists awarded the Nobel prize for chemistry on Wednesday.
Chalfie, Tsien and Osamu Shimomura shared the prize for discovering and developing green fluorescent protein (GFP) a key tool used for tagging bioscience processes. It can illuminate growing cancer tumours, show the development of Alzheimer's in the brain or the growth of pathogenic bacteria.
With GFP, scientists...

Recent studies show that testicular germ cells resemble very much the much controversial embryonic stem cells. The wonderful thing about embryonic stem cells is this particular type of cell can transform into other specialized cells and so create new tissues, muscles and even organs. Embryonic stem cells are very controversial because their use poses an ethical question, as these cells come from human embryos. Fortunately, the new finds in this field show that adult germ cells found in testicles have the same qualities as embryonic stem cells. Testicular germ cells are responsible for giving...

Berlin - Global warming will make sea level around the globe rise a
full meter this century, two senior German scientists warned Wednesday.
Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, who heads the Potsdam Institute for Research on Global Warming Effects and Jochem Marotzke, a leading meteorologist, said UN-backed data on climate change, predicting a rise of 18 to 59 centimetres, was out of date.
"We now have to expect that the sea level will rise by a metre this century," said Schellnhuber in Berlin.
He said international plans to limit the rise in average global temperatures to just...
