The Beijing Olympics were close to becoming a disaster over the protest-marred torch relay, Canadian International Olympic Committee member Richard Pound said in a rare attack on Tuesday.
Pound, a former IOC vice-president who lost the presidential election to Jacques Rogge in 2001, said that many western nations were in a boycott mood over China's crushing of the unrest in Tibet.

The Olympic flame on Tuesday arrived in Beijing for the final three days of torch relay before it reaches the Bird's Nest Olympic stadium on Friday evening.
The relay in Beijing will begin on Wednesday at the Forbidden City, just north of Tiananmen Square and end at another historical Beijing landmark, the Temple of Heaven.
It will last more than four hours, with the relay route being 16.442 kilometers long. There will be 433 torch bearers on the first day.

Beijing organizers said Wednesday that they were ready to hold the opening ceremony on Friday.
The director of the opening and closing ceremonies department of the organizing committee, Zhang Heping, said that after three test runs they were confident that everything was in place.
He told a press conference that the ceremony was divided into three parts.

China has everything in place to stage an Olympic Games which will change the world's perception of the country, International Olympic Committee (IOC) chief Jacques Rogge said on the eve of the opening ceremony.
"We are extremely eager to get the Games going. It is kind of an expectation an athlete has before competing," he said.

The opening ceremony for the Beijing Olympics got underway with a fireworks display on Friday night, setting the stage for a three-hour extravaganza.
