Music Sales Dropped In 2008

Some genres, however, are less and less sought for irrespective of the Internet and its growth. One of the genres that registered significant drops in the past couple of years is Latin music. Between 2007 and 2008, the drops registered in Latin music sales were of 21.1%, whereas between 2006 and 2007 they had dropped by 15.6%.

Latin music, however, was not the only genre that suffered a loss in popularity and, consequently, sales. Country music registered a decline in sales of 24% last year. Classical albums took an even worse fall, as they registered a slide of 26% during 2008 as opposed to 2007.

According to statistics, all the 12 music genres registered sale losses, for the second consecutive year. In addition to this, album sales as a total fell again, for the seventh consecutive time in the past eight years.

The genres that registered the smallest declines were rock, which fell by only 6.5% and alternative, which registered a decline of 8.7%.

As the Internet grows and becomes easier to access and services like iTunes are making music available in formats such as MP3 which the user can listen to on a number of devices, not to mention the possibility to buy just one song instead of an entire album, it certainly won’t be surprising to notice that music sales and album sales will continue to register significant drops in the years to come.
