PlayStation 3 may have impressed through its hardware specifications and its Blu-Ray player, but it didn’t impress Sony executives through its sales figures. The high-end gaming console didn’t start very well, as it cost Sony more to manufacture a unit than the company received for it. Moreover, there were no exciting game titles when it was launched and, therefore, users were not so impressed with it.
When it was released, PlayStation 3 had a price tag of $600, which was pretty much, compared with its competition, especially Microsoft’s game rig, the Xbox. Even so, Sony spent nearly $840 to manufacture it, but this reason alone was simply not enough for the console’s potential customers.
As sales were looking pretty bad, Sony was forced to cut PlayStation 3’s price and the company did it several times, in fact. However, the price cuts didn’t produce a boom in terms of sales, as it seemed that the Xbox was doing better and the Wii was smashing its two competitors combined.
For this reason, it is clear that Sony has to take the necessary measures in order to get its console’s price somehow in-line with its competitors request for their devices. Many analysts believe that even though users realize that the PS3 is superior to its competitors, many of them are not willing to pay the extra to get a Blu-Ray player and a high-definition-capable device overall.
Still, PlayStation 3 has a single clear advantage over Xbox. It is the Sony Network, the multiplayer service of the console and, most important, it is free of charge. On the other hand, Microsoft is charging its users to let them do the same thing on the Xbox.
This year seems to be a good one for PlayStation 3, as there are many exclusive games that are being developed for the console right now. If you have a PlayStation 3, you will have the chance to be delighted by games like Gran Turismo 5, God of War III and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
