A father and his autistic son are the two protagonists of an incredibly impressing survival story. According to a U.S. Coast Guard, Walter Marino, 46, and his son Chris Marino, 13, both from Winter Park, Florida, went swimming Saturday night when they were caught in an outgoing current and swept out to sea.
The boy was the one who was initially drifted away by the current and his father went after him wanting to save his life. The two became separated after dark. They were found by rescuers the following morning. It was Marino's daughter who saw they were in trouble and called the Coast Guard.
The father was found by a boater around 7:30 a.m. Sunday approximately 8 miles from shore. The son on the other hand was found by the Coast Guard about two hours later, a mile from where his father was found. Both were in good condition Monday at a local hospital.
Apart from their breathtaking survival story, the father said on NBC's "Today" show that he had been screaming “To infinity ...!” and his son would reply "And beyond!" These lines belong to the Disney character Buzz Lightyear in “Toy Story,” one of Christopher’s favorite movies.
"Buzz Lightyear got us through," Marino said, referring to the cartoon character in the film. "I'd be screaming ‘to infinity, and beyond,' and then I would hear him, and it would get more and more distant until finally I couldn't hear anything else."
Lucky for them the youngster is a genuine water lover and feels very comfortable while swimming. Perhaps this is what made him go on doing the "doggie paddle" and floating on his back until morning when he was rescued.
